Bury My Heart at Redtree

Bury My Heart at Redtree is a haunting exploration of the conflict that resonates deep in one man’s soul. Set against the grandeur of the Great Plains and reflective of the storm raging in the heart of America’s legal system, it is Chalfant at his thrilling, thought-provoking best.

When The Levee Breaks

In the great American tradition of To Kill a Mockingbird and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Patrick Chalfant's stunning debut novel tells a classic story of an American farmer, Alec Carlyle, through the eyes of his son Hadley.

With sorrow and fear, Hadley watches the slow deterioration of his family's finances. Faced with foreclosure or bankruptcy, Hadley's father stands firm on his self-imposed moral obligations - and the family suffers for it. When Hadley discovers not only the underhanded dealings of the local banker, Mr. Finken, but drugs, blackmail, and murder - he sees the opportunity to change the family's fate and perhaps even save the farm.

Alec Carlyle is one of a dying breed - and his struggle to retain the family farm is genuinely affecting, harrowing, and profoundly true. A unique tale of an innocent boy's journey into a treacherous adult world.

When the Levee Breaks isn't just an excellent coming-of-age story set in rural America; it's also a nuanced meditation on honor and responsibility, crime and punishment, the nautre of evil, and the potential for both nastiness and nobility that lies within us all.” –John Wooley, author of Awash in the Blood

"... a lyrical, layered story about discovering value in the midst of loss." - Teresa Miller, author of Family Correspondence
